TOEFL Test Format

The TOEFL evaluates Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking skills in academic contexts. The Listening section measures spoken English comprehension, the Reading section measures comprehension of academic texts, the Writing section tests academic writing abilities, and the Speaking section assesses the ability to speak effectively in academic situations.

TOEFL Listening


The TOEFL Listening section evaluates the ability to understand spoken English in academic contexts, and takes about 60-90 minutes to complete. The Listening section consists of lectures, conversations, and discussions, with test takers answering questions to demonstrate comprehension.


The TOEFL Reading section measures the ability to comprehend academic texts in English. Test takers have 60-80 minutes to complete three to five passages, each followed by 12-14 questions. The section is scored on a scale of 0-30.


The TOEFL Speaking section evaluates the ability to speak effectively in academic situations. Test takers complete six tasks in about 20 minutes, covering a range of topics. The section is scored on a scale of 0-30.


The TOEFL Writing section consists of two tasks and requires test takers to write responses to academic writing prompts. Test takers have 50 minutes to complete the section, and it is scored on a scale of 0-30.

Ways to take TOEFL

Internet Based Test (iBT)

TOEFL iBT is the most popular format, assessing listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills in academic settings, taking 3.5 hours to complete and remaining valid for two years. This test is able to be sat at home or in a test centre.

Paper Based Test (PBT)

TOEFL PBT assesses listening, structure, writing, and reading skills, takes 2.5 hours, and is offered only where iBT is unavailable. It is valid for two years and can only be taken in a registered test centre.
